This organization was created by our MRP Youth Chairman Matt Hall to raises funds to help educate & bring more youth into the party. This past weekend, several students with varying levels of experience in the party, and supporting a variety of candidates received a scholarship covering conference registration and a small stipend for food while attending the conference. A website has been started featuring thank yous of grateful GOP Youth Scholars, and with more information about this great program.

http://youthscholarships.blogspot.com

Mr. Perks Arrested!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_HIV-8p-l1pk/RvmfLPSBzzI/AAAAAAAAACY/qeLVk9r49y0/s400/pig5-784840.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5114293867285434162" />MTA mascot arrested by The Man
From Leon Drolet

Mr. Perks was legally parked his spot in front of the Capitol, which had been reserved for a specified time. MSA members say that if the University doesn't get the money, it could be forced to raise tuition in the middle of the year. University officials have refused to speculate on tuition increases.

MSA President Zack Yost urged students to attend the rally in an e-mail message sent to all University students on Thursday. Additionally, MSA representatives announced the rally before the start of large lectures around campus and distributed pledge cards.

"We're aiming for 200 students, but even getting that many people to come to an event on campus is difficult," Yost said.

Yost said he asked Faculty Senate Chair Charles Smith and Jennifer Meyers, the associate director of the Residential College, to ask faculty members to be lenient with students who are absent because of the rally.

Neither Smith nor Meyers returned calls for comment yesterday.

At least six students associated with campus conservative groups plan to attend the rally but hope to convince attendees that cuts to the University's budget - not an increase in state funding - are the way to prevent mid-year tuition hikes.

"We believe that lower tuition can be achieved through fiscal responsibility," said the counter-protest's organizer, Justin Zatkoff, the head of the Michigan Federation of College Republicans.

Yost welcomes anyone interested in attending the rally, but said he is disappointed that these students don't share MSA's viewpoint on the issue.

"Anyone who wants to come help prevent this tuition increase can come," Yost said. "That's fine."

Zatkoff and his fellow College Republicans - working with the Mackinac Center for Public Policy, a conservative Michiganthink tank - plan to distribute flyers containing information provided by the Mackinac Center arguing that the University should cut its spending to prevent a tuition hike.

"There's little to no evidence saying that higher appropriations from the state translate into lower tuition," Zatkoff said. More appropriations and tuition rates, however, have very little in common.

These helpless students are nothing more than political pawns being moved around for the benefit of faculty and other university administrators. In order for schools to continue to receive their bigger budgets, higher salaries, and other silver-lined amenities, they need these students to protest in the name of “lowering tuition.”

I encourage all Michigan students to attend Wednesday’s protest; but keep an open mind and don’t be surprised when they try to silence students like me protesting in favor of lower tuition through fiscal responsibility.

McCain Impresses Republicans on Mackinac Island

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_HIV-8p-l1pk/Rvekm_SBzyI/AAAAAAAAACQ/oDh5tEDYJM8/s320/n2337911_41152803_6728.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5113736891631521570" />
From MIRS:

Maybe McCain Isn't Dead Yet
(MACKINAC ISLAND) - The morning after bringing the Mackinac Republican Leadership Conference to its feet with a rousing case for keeping the U.S. military in Iraq, U.S. Sen. John McCAIN (R-Ariz.) finished a solid second in a Republican presidential primary straw poll taken this weekend of 979 conference attendees by national blog Hotline.

The former 2008 front-runner, left for dead by Attorney General Mike COX and others after slashing nearly his entire paid staff in Michigan and across the country due to deep financial issues (See “McCain Backers Hanging On, For Now,” 7/11/07), McCain had the support of the 27 percent of those participating. The number had him 12 percentage points behind the 39 percent Michigan native Mitt ROMNEY garnered.

U.S. Rep. Ron PAUL (R-Texas), who had a noticeable contingent working the Island for him, finished third with 10.8 percent. Former New York City Mayor Rudy GIULIANI was close behind with 10.62 percent. Former U.S. Sen. Fred THOMPSON took 7 percent and U.S. Rep. Duncan HUNTER (R-Calif.) took 1 percent.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike HUCKABEE and U.S. Sen. Sam BROWNBACK (R-Kansas) were scheduled to speak at the island, but cancelled. They received 3 and 2 percent support, respectively.

Romney's top finish was no surprise considering the deep support the Massachusetts Governor has created within the Michigan Republican Party's grassroots. Romney has made more Election '08 campaign trips to the Great Lakes States than any other candidate, Republican and Democrat. His political action committee has gave generously to many county and congressional party organizations (See “Romney Raises $775K For Michigan,” 7/25/06).

But conference attendees used the word “plastic” to describe Romney's scatter-shot speech, while McCain gave easily the best address of the conference. Both McCain and Romney made themselves visible on the Island. McCain walked around Main Street like any other tourist. One woman said she saw McCain at least three times on Saturday, once buying fudge. Romney held an ice cream socials and allowed pictures to be taken with him for $1,000 a pop as part of a fundraiser.

Other Articles On Mackinac Conference:

McCain renews stance on Iraq, saying consequences of failure 'horrendous'

Republican Lawmakers Feel Pressure From Anti Tax Advocates

McCain's strong second place showing was perhaps the biggest surprise at Mackinac.

“I think John McCain gave the best speech I’ve ever seen him give," MI GOP Chair Saul Anuzis said to reporters.

Fred Fizzles; McCain a Hit

On The Record: Joe Sylvester

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_HIV-8p-l1pk/RvGKKAAePLI/AAAAAAAAABo/eulhvmTMvFA/s400/OnTheRecord-JoeSylvester.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5112018956447530162" />
(please click image to enlarge)

Joe Sylvester: simple author of The Michigan Conservative Dossier or lying sleezeball trying to have some sort of relevance?

WE REPORT, YOU DECIDE!

1)
Myth: Joe Sylvester claims to be fair and factual.

FACT: Joe Sylvester is hardly fair! See photo above. Exhibit A clearly displays a comment in which Dan Carlson attempted to post. The comment contained the letter from Matt Hall which cleared up the situation of him apparently pulling his endorsement of Chuck Yob (9/9/07 Matt Hall pulls endorsement of Chuck Yob). Since Joe Sylvester rejected that comment, it also happened to kick off this blog. Even after presented with the facts, Joe refused to correct his post. Instead, the writers of TmiR came forward with the truth.

2)
Myth: Joe Sylvester claims on his comments that "no personal attacks" will be accepted.

FACT: Clearly this just isn't the case. As you can see comments such as "Send Matt Hall to Aushwitz," and "F*** Chuck Yob, F*** Matt Hall, and F*** Justin Zatkoff" exist on nearly every controversial post. In fact he goes far enough to clearly attack many individuals including the distinguished 9th District Chairman Glenn Clark on more than several occasions.

3)
Myth: Joe Sylvester is the man standing next to Mr. Garrison in the Southpark photo

FACT: Unclear at this time. Details are forthcoming.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_HIV-8p-l1pk/RvGUHAAePMI/AAAAAAAAABw/Hk5iDjKjS1w/s400/sylvester.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5112029900024200386" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_HIV-8p-l1pk/RvGUOgAePNI/AAAAAAAAAB4/HnbbS_76ATk/s400/sylvester2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5112030028873219282" />

Mackinac Attendees: Don't Miss This!

Attention all Republican Youth Mackinac Conference Attendees. The security and direction of our country are at stake. We are all fortunate to have great Republicans candidates running for President. It’s going to be a real battle, but I’m confident we will deliver Michigan to all of the Republicans, from the top to the bottom of the ticket.

I also believe that is extremely important that we remain vigilant in electing Republicans to the University and State Education board seats down ticket. We must have a greater voice on these boards to ensure the proper education of our children. To accomplish this, we need to nominate and elect strong and experienced candidates. David Brandon is one such candidate that I will be supporting for the University of Michigan Board of Regents. Dave was a strong advocate on the Board while serving for eight years. His private and public sector experience will again be an asset to the U of M Board of Regents.

Due to the importance of the University and State Education board elections, I would like to share with you my plans for next year. In the event that Dave chooses not to run, I will seek the nomination for the University Of Michigan Board Of Regents in 2008. My experience with the process will be an asset in this endeavor. In 2004, I was unanimously nominated by the party to run for the Board. I went on to secure many editorial board endorsements, including the Detroit News, and ultimately received over 1.8 million votes. Though I did not win, I garnered tremendous experience, goodwill and name recognition that will enable me to hit the ground running in 2008.

Following the election of 2004, I further focused my efforts on the advancement of the Michigan Republican Party. I worked to elect our current Chairman, Saul Anuzis, served on the State Committee, was elected as Financial Council in 2005, and presently serve as Treasurer of the party. I look forward to the challenges that lie ahead and the opportunity to continue to serve.

Thank you for your continued support and friendship.

Best regards,

Carl Meyers
Treasurer, MRP

The Straight Talk and Common Sense You've Been Looking For

Some supposed "College Republicans" have asked several questions to me via the blogosphere. After a conference call with many of my "cronies," I now have all the answers you need. Below are the questions and answers:

You endorsed John McCain through his PAC last fall, yet you denied endorsing McCain during your campaign for College Republicans chairman. Why not be honest with everyone and as you've been saying no "bull shitting"?

Now correct me if I'm wrong, which I don't think I am, but I NEVER "denied" endorsing John McCain. Maybe I didn't parade through the streets with McCain stickers all over me, but I'm pretty sure I never actually denied endorsing him.

Most experts say about 25% of the Republican Party consists of social conservatives. Why would you risk offending them by engaging in what some consider explicit behavior? I think we have all seen those sexually-themed photos of you from this year's CRNC Convention?

Those photos are about as sexually explicit as a sears catalog. SoCo's understand innocent college fun!

Who is funding the statewide College Republicans?

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_HIV-8p-l1pk/RvBmYgAePII/AAAAAAAAABQ/4SWJBZbi9Yg/s320/MTA+Funding.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5111698148160322690" />

Leon Drolet --- See Above Photo (click to enlarge)

Where is this money being deposited, and what happened to the money from the former chairman, Dan Carlson?

Well, see that's kind of hard to explain. I was busy counting all the money in order to prepare it for my offshore bank account, but Mr. Perk's starting eating all the money! Now we're broke.

On a more serious note: The College Republicans have a not-for-profit business account with J.P. Morgan.

While we're on the subject of money, what is Leon Drolet's relationship with you and the College Republicans as an organization?

See Above Photo

You made a big issue out of the new website. How much did this cost and who paid for it?

An illegal immigrant made it with billions of dollars from out-of-state donors.

-or my brother made it and I gave him $361.

One last question on finances … will you provide members with a copy of the applicable financial statements?

Absolutely! I will provide any specific IRS forms requested!

Will you provide Michigan's College Republicans with a copy of the constitution?

That seems like a slightly odd question, but whatever floats your boat: the Constitution can be viewed online HERE.

Speaking of the constitution, why aren't the meetings being conducted over conference calls for those who live in far-flung corners of Michigan?

The board voted to end conference calls. I must abide by the board's decision.

And what about minutes and meeting agendas – nobody has ever seen them. Will you release them online?

I have no hidden agendas and minutes are e-mailed to the e-board after monthly meetings. Contact your chapter chair for a copy

Have you started to plan next year's College Republican convention? If so, do you have a date or location?

Yes, but it's part of my hidden agenda.

What do you think of having a youth chairman who didn't support President George W. Bush?

I'm not sure that's true. However, as for the general nature of the question: Every Republican has the right to support whomever they choose; unless it's Hilary or Hussein Obama or a RINO that votes for tax hikes.

Why have you started a new blog? Is there something wrong with Joe Sylvester's popular Michigan Conservative Dossier?

How stupid of me Of course there should exist no other blog anywhere on the blogosphere other than Joe's; especially when Joe's blog can be so reliable .

These are simple questions -- it shouldn't take long to prepare responses, which makes you wonder why Zatkoff needed four days to respond.

I apologize for the tardiness. My out-of-state billion dollar donors and Mr. Perk's wrote these answers for me. They are slow.

Whatever his excuse, this is not the type of leadership or accountability College Republicans deserve. It's time for a change.

Yeah we need a change! I have already been in office a whopping 49 days! How about a 60 day term limit for MFCR Chairs? Would that make you happy?

To Reform Caucus: You Are An Idiot!

House Republicans Need Our Support!

I've just returned to Ann Arbor from spending about 72 hours in Lansing supporting the House Republicans. Bush, said he was bowing out of the race to keep his Republican National Committee seat in the interests of party unity. But he also signaled he may target party leaders, including state Chairman Saulius "Saul" Anuzis, if Republicans don't improve their election performance. Yob and Anuzis have not seen eye to eye on a number of issues.

"If we are not successful in 2008, I encourage our party activists to take a long and hard look at electing a party chairman who is focused on defeating the Democrats rather than defeating incumbent national committee members, Republican state legislators, and other party leaders," Yob said in an e-mail to party members on Tuesday.

Yob singled out Anuzis and state Attorney General Mike Cox as Republicans who "must choose whether to attempt to bring the party together."

In a phone interview, Yob said he hopes his decision will help Republicans focus on winning elections, instead of fighting internal battles.

"In the 1990s, we won almost every (major race). And I sure didn't want a bunch of infighting over the next five months on my race when we should be going after Democrats," Yob said."

UMich Still Using Race!

From the Michigan Daily:

"University officials have decided to continue making race, gender and national origin information visible to admissions officers.

Admissions officials said in March that they hadn't decided whether to restrict that data. We here at TMR will be sad to see him go. One thing can be certain though: Chuck will ALWAYS be there for the youth.

Below is his letter detailing why he chose not to seek re-election. For all our sake, I hope this letter is taken to heart by many of the top Republican leaders.

September 12, 2007

Dear Republican,

I first got involved in politics about 40 years ago when a friend named Harry Gast called me and asked to take me to lunch to talk. We went to lunch and he asked me to run his campaign for State Representative. I told him I couldn't because I was a Democrat. He convinced me at lunch that I was really a Republican, and I switched parties and became his campaign manager. Harry Gast spent decades in the state legislature - much of it as Senate Appropriations Chairman.

Over the next decade I moved around the state and served as finance chairman in half a dozen counties, county chairman, district chairman, and national committeeman.

In 1980, I was Kent County Chairman and I supported John Connally for President. He raised millions of dollars and looked good on paper but couldn't seem to catch on with voters. When he dropped out of the race Ronald Reagan called me and I took a role with his campaign. Most of my friends supported George Bush instead because they were bitter that Reagan challenged Ford in 1976. Reagan won in 1980, and I was the political contact for West Michigan for President Reagan throughout the 1980's.

In 1982, I was District Chairman and I encouraged Betsy and Dick DeVos to become active in the Kent County Republican Party.

In 1988, I supported Vice-President Bush for President. Lee Atwater was considering pulling out of Michigan after Robertson won Iowa and I convinced him that I could be elected Chairman of the convention and then win the convention. With the support of John Engler and Peter Secchia I was elected Chairman of the Michigan convention in 1988 and upon my election the Robertson people walked out in protest and held their own rump convention. Bush stopped the Robertson momentum in Michigan and later won the Presidency.

In 1990, I was a very strong supporter of Governor Engler and was certainly a key member of his team. I spent a great deal of financial and time resources in 1990 and I am proud of our success. John Engler later sent me a card saying that he would not have won without my support. It might be cliché for a thank you card, but I believe he meant it when he wrote it.

In 1992, President Bush appointed me Chairman of Credentials for the 1992 Republican National Convention. We fought like mad with the Buchanan delegates. Ross Perot was running for President. It turned out to be a year where Republicans were fractured, rather than united, and were unable to win.

In 1994, I was an early and strong supporter of Spence Abraham for U.S. Senate and worked hard for his successful campaign. I was also campaign manager for Candice Miller's successful convention nomination.

In 1996, I supported Phil Gramm for President. I thought Bob Dole was not conservative enough for my ideological beliefs. I am not sure anyone could have defeated Clinton in 1996 but I am convinced that Phil Gramm would have made an excellent President.

In 1997, I ran for Chairman of the Republican National Committee and lost to Jim Nicholson of Colorado by 6 votes out of 165 on the first ballot. After the fourth ballot I endorsed him and he went on to win.

In 1998, I supported John Smietanka for Attorney General instead of Scott Romney. I still believe Smietanka was a far better candidate because voters in a race for Attorney General appreciate electing a crime fighter over a corporate lawyer. Smietanka was unable to win that election because our party was not united behind him and various party leaders were unwilling to offer their unconditional and wholehearted financial and political support. Our party lost because we were not united.

In 2000, I supported George W Bush for President. I supported him largely out of loyalty to his father, and partially out of hope that we could unite Michigan behind Governor Engler after a bruising nomination for Attorney General in the previous cycle. By the time the Michigan Primary came around I realized that John McCain was also a solid candidate. John Engler asked me to run for Congress and I agreed.

In 2002, I wanted to support Candice Miller for Governor because I thought she was the candidate most capable of defeating Jennifer Granholm. After a few months I assumed she was not running and endorsed Dick Posthumus. I strongly supported Terri Lynn Land for Secretary of State and Mike Cox for Attorney General early in their campaigns. At the time I endorsed Terri she was in third place in the race and at the time I endorsed Mike Cox most people had never heard of him. In fact, Governor Engler claimed on television to not know who he was. The party eventually united behind them because Dick Posthumus had the good sense to put together a united ticket prior to convention. I say with considerable ego that neither of them would be statewide elected officials without our support.

In 2004 and 2006 our party was fractured and never really had a chance of victory. Party leaders didn't communicate, most were competitive with each other, and too often they were working to undermine, rather than support, each other. It is unfortunate, and it led to a defeated party. I did not support Saul Anuzis for election as Chairman because he was part of the regime that had run almost every unsuccessful campaign in recent memory. Their group lost Dole 1996, Smietanka 1998 General Election, Abraham 2000, Posthumus 2002, and they had never won a major election in the state of Michigan. I thought it made little sense to put them in charge of the party. They still haven't won to this day and our party continues to suffer for it.

Saul has proven to be excellent at internal politics and communications, and is clearly a national leader in the use of technology in our party. But he still hasn't won, and I think that is partially because he spends too much time manipulating internal Republican politics and not enough time beating up Democrats. If he focused his energy on Democrats he has the potential to be a good Chairman. But time is running out - eventually the state party needs to be successful and finally win an election.

In 2008, in my view the most important thing in politics is for John McCain to be elected President of the United States. John McCain is by far the most prepared candidate to handle the most important issue of our time - the fight against radical Islamist extremism. He is the most conservative candidate in the race. It might not be the Bush brand of conservatism - but the Bush brand has proven to be faulty on important issues such as government spending. John McCain is pro-life, anti-government spending, and clearly the most prepared to be Commander-in-Chief. He can also attract the independents and yes, Democrats, necessary to defeat Hillary Clinton. Rudy Giuliani and John McCain are the only candidates who can credibly say that.

Recently I announced my campaign for re-election in order to end the race quickly and focus my energies on helping McCain win Michigan. I quickly received the support of most of the people that were needed to win re-election including unanimous support from West Michigan - a special thanks to Congressman Ehlers, Congressman Hoekstra, and Congressman Upton.

Shortly after announcing for re-election I spoke with Attorney General Mike Cox and realized we were not in agreement regarding the future of our party. He made it clear that he could not support Holly Hughes for national committeewoman. In my opinion, and with all due respect to the other three national committee members I served with, she is the hardest worker of them all and I support her strongly for re-election. The conversation with Mike ended rather abruptly and soon after negative emails were sent out about me - most of which were not factual.

I also feel like our party needs to unite in order to have any chance of victory in 2008. Michigan performed terribly in the 2006 elections and I strongly believe we need a united party in order to have any hope to take back the house and win as we did in previous cycles. My long history in Republican politics has taught me that when we are united we win - divided we lose.

I am very confident that I can win re-election as national committeeman by taking the campaign to the precinct delegates as we did successfully, without failure, many times before despite big name endorsements being on the other side. The recent rule changes in favor of Precinct Delegates over District Chairs and County Chairs make that task somewhat easier.

It is also clear that waging such a campaign would tear the party apart at a time when we are weak and have upcoming campaigns to retake the State House and win Michigan for the Presidential nominee next year; and regain the Governor's office while holding the Attorney General and Secretary of State in 2010.

Therefore, I am announcing that I am no longer a candidate for re-election as Republican National Committeeman. I am nothing if not loyal, some would say to a fault, and I greatly appreciate every ounce of support that you have given me, and more importantly given our successful Republican candidates over the last 40 years. It is appreciated and will not be forgotten.

I like Keith Butler and supported him for U.S. Senate despite Mike Bouchard being a friend of mine and my son working for Jerry Zandstra. Keith has the potential to be a tremendous advocate for our party - assuming he is willing to do the work necessary of a successful national committeeman.

My predecessor, Peter Secchia, and I treated the national committee position as a fulltime job working for our party at our own expense. It would be best for our party if we found someone who was willing to do the same.

It will be an interesting test to see whether Anuzis and Cox choose to continue to attack other party leaders now that I am no longer a candidate for re-election or whether they choose to attempt to bring the party together. That decision might be determinative of whether we are successful as a party in 2008. I urge you to hold them accountable for their ultimate decision.

If we are not successful in 2008 I encourage our party activists to take a long and hard look at electing a party chairman who is focused on defeating the Democrats rather than defeating incumbent national committee members, Republican state legislators, and other party leaders. If we are lucky enough to reverse the losses of 2006 then I encourage the party to stick with a winning formula.

My service as national committeeman will conclude at the closing of the 2008 Republican National Convention. I had major role in the election of President Ronald Reagan, President George Bush, Governor John Engler, Senator Spence Abraham, Secretary of State Candice Miller, Congressman Vern Ehlers, Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land, Attorney General Mike Cox, and too many legislators to list. It is the candidates who deserve the praise, but the rest of us can also be proud of our efforts.

The fact that I am not a candidate for re-election does not mean I will not be active in our party and advocating for the best Republican candidates in future statewide elections. In fact, just the opposite is on the horizon. I will be very active.

I will no longer have the restraint of serving in party leadership and instead will speak my mind plainly, and clearly, to all those who inquire - and some who don't. When those of you in the media need a colorful quote, I encourage you to give me a call.

With that, I look forward to seeing you at Mackinac. I am still bringing volunteers. If you would like to join us please send an email to yobchuck@aol.com.

Most Sincerely,

Chuck Yob
Republican National Committeeman for Michigan
RNC Vice-Chairman

PS: Tim, I am available for the Skubick show anytime after the Mackinac Conference.
